Upper Lake, Bhopal – The Lifeline of the City of Lakes
Upper Lake, locally known as Bada Talab, is the heart and soul of Bhopal. Built in the 11th century by the legendary King Raja Bhoj, this man-made reservoir is not just a historic marvel but also a lifeline for the city. Spanning over 36 square kilometers, it is the oldest and largest lake in central India, supplying drinking water to a major part of Bhopal.
According to folklore, Raja Bhoj constructed the lake on the advice of his royal physicians, who believed that bathing in these waters could cure him of a skin disease. Whether myth or truth, the lake continues to be a source of life, beauty, and inspiration.
The Upper Lake is surrounded by lush greenery, walking tracks, and the peaceful Kamla Park, making it a favorite spot for both locals and tourists. On any given day, you can see families enjoying picnics, fitness enthusiasts jogging by the banks, or couples soaking in the calm atmosphere.
Adventure seekers can enjoy a variety of boating experiences—from paddle boats and speedboats to sailboats—operated by the Boat Club on the lake’s eastern shore. As the sun sets, the view from the lake is breathtaking, reflecting the sky in hues of orange and gold.
Bird watchers are also drawn to the lake, as it attracts numerous migratory and local bird species, especially in the winter months. Together with the Lower Lake, it forms the Bhoj Wetland, a declared Ramsar site of international importance.
